Introduction

NagyMolnar  - The Geometry of Light - Artist statement

The "Geometry of Light" art project, launched by Krisztián Nagy and Csaba Molnár in 2020, came about after a lengthy period of technological experimentation, driven by the deep-felt creative urge bursting from both members of the art duo. Our art inherit Glass Art and Light Art elements, so we mixed this techniques (glass facing, and light designing). Our works can be regarded as a fusion of Op Art and Light Art, but as there is no standard name for it, our form of art could be called “geo-optical light sculpture”. It should be emphasized, that we are not digital artists, we achieve our visual world through the glassworking (the physics of glass) and the creative use of light technology. Our creative process is divided into two parts: glasswork and light-planing/designing.

Light is part of our everyday experience – our existence would be unimaginable without it. As lighting technologies have developed, they have become an increasingly important and decisive component of our lives and our living spaces. Our daily active rhythm of life has become increasingly extended in recent decades, which is perhaps why a work of art that, altough visible during the day, shows its really exciting side in the darkness of the evening and night, could be an exciting jewel in the living space of an art-lover.

With the help of our hand-built light objects, we attempt to shape light as a “material” into simple geometrical patterns and arrange it into complex spatial networks. Then, with the use of special glass mirrors, we place this “shaped light” into new perspectives, into “infinite space”, where it conjures up a completely different kind of spectacle and takes on new meaning. An important element of our technique is that we make the "source" of the light invisible, so that the lights do not appear directly in our works, adding to the mystical effect. This innovative, darkness and light-based spectacle opens up a new dimension for exploring cavernous depths and vast distances, which we utilise to map out the universe of our imagination (black holes, space-time tunnels, pulsars, galaxies...).

By making light, also with using darkness interact with the physical and optical properties of special glass and by creating different geometric shapes and spatial networks, we aim to provide observers with a new visual experience, something to contemplate that has never been seen before. We hope that, beyond the mere spectacle, the viewer will be touched by the thoughts and questions that inspired our works.

Our work often deals with deep and serious issues. We often ask the question of how and why human or our world came into being, whether it is the result of conscious planning, or whether, through a series of coincidences, a species exists on Earth that is capable of searching for the meaning and origin of its own existence...

The central components of our works are the questions of physicality without space and space without physicality, the formation of virtual mass, and the use of light to render material visible (or invisible).

Our works are able to show not only the static, but also the constant variability, with the changeability of light, either directly or programmatically, giving us the opportunity to try to illustrate the concept of the 4th dimension, that is time, and to make the viewer feel the constant change and the tension that comes with it.
